It is hallmarked for Turner & Simpson, of Birmingham, England, with city and sterling symbols that, while rubbed, are legible. The date letter is obscured, although the outline shape is for "Cycle XIII," which ran 1950-74.

It is Georgian in style, with a plain body that has an applied rim and the previously mentioned footed base.

length 5 5/8 inches, total Troy weight 7.10 ounces, fine condition, monogrammed as shown in third enlargement.

For those of you who wonder what that unusual symbol between the Whiting trademark and "sterling" might mean, we suspect that is a letter h inside a circle, meaning 'heavy,' since these weigh a bit more than the average Lily butter spreader.

This 7 7/8" long, not quite 1.1 T. oz., coin silver spoon has a double provenance.

It is stamped "E.S. & D.R. Burr" and "coin," for the jewelers located in the small, central Wisconsin town of Berlin. An entry in a 1919 "Jewelers' Circular," notes the death of Daniel Riley Burr at age 85, still resident in Berlin.

There is also a right-facing, bust that McGrew in his work on pseudo hallmarks identifies as an unknown Chicago maker. He cites only Chicago retailers associated with this, so... Click for details

Durgin Sterling and Cut Glass Dolphin Handle Syrup Pitcher
Silver : Sterling : Hollowware

Old Friends
3266f   $385.00

A striking union of sterling silver with clear glass, this 6 1/2" high syrup jug is one item of a line of hollowware produced by Durgin.  Other forms in this late 19th to early 20th century series include a cream and sugar pair, a vase, a sugar shaker, and possibly more.

Common to all these pieces are silver bases, crowns, and the truly defining element, which is a dolphin or sea serpent handle.

The bodies are high quality, finely cut rock crystal.  At least one source attributes the... Click for details

Trefid Spoon Circa 1700, Barnstaple or Exeter, Possibly by John Smith

20171009-01   On Hold

Offered is a fine late 17th Century or very early 18th Century trefid table spoon bearing the maker's mark "IS" struck four times as the only mark.

This mark appears in Figure 8 of the article "In Search of John Smith" (a well-known Taunton and Barnstaple silversmith) by Tim Kent, F.S.A., which appeared in the January/February 2005 edition of The Finial (Volume 15/03). The spoon in that article was an acanthus-back trefid, also struck four times with this exact mark. The spoon was shown... Click for details

Unique Dognose / Wavy End Tablespoon Hallmarked for London c.1715
Silver : Sterling

Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
20171008-01   $275.00

Offered is an interesting and unusual early 18th Century Brittania standard English silver tablespoon hallmarked for London, and what appears to be the year 1715 or so. The maker's mark is poorly struck but looks like it may be "Sc", which would make it likely the maker is William Scarlett, specialist spoonmaker of London working in this period. Scarlett was prolific and experimented with form, so that would make sense. This spoon has a very unusual midrib that branches out into almost a... Click for details

or "kidney" shaped bowl, length 9 5/8 inches, weight 4.27 Troy ounces, gilt bowl, excellent condition.

Granted, this is not the rarest piece of Tiffany flatware you'll encounter while surfing the interwebz, but several features do make it stand out from the crowd: 1) the overall color, condition and lack of polishing wear 2) the exceptionally well executed and decorative Art Nouveau monogram (see third photo) which I can not decipher, and 3) the eminently reasonable price tag.
