Art Pottery by Hollywood darling, Sascha Brastoff. Sascha's work became recognized by the rich and famous in the 1940s and afterwards. Carmen Miranda introduced Sascha's art to Hollywood who welcomed his bold, modern style. Brastoff opened his ceramic studio, got high prices for the time and had great successes.
This awesome set includes a wonderful large ashtray and a covered cigarette holder. Striking and impressive vintage cigarette set by Sascha Brastoff. This Jewel Bird ashtray is a Peacock Pattern. This piece is just stunning as a display piece! It features a beautiful white peacock with green, blue, purple and gold highlights. The peacock design is done with splattered dots of pale purple, white and gold. The gold shimmers if you turn it or if the light hits it at an angle. This beautiful work of art is signed on the front in the lower corners with "Sascha B" . On the backs are the rooster logos and the full signed signature in gold, "Sascha Brastoff" . Also it says "California", USA, and they are numbered.
I've heard that in the postwar era, the great majority of the cigarette holders held the cigarettes horizontally, stacked one upon the other. Before the war, they were held in vertical holders. The cigarette holder is lidded. I noticed that this cigarette holder is not very wide but in the 1930s-60s, not all cigarettes had filters, so the extra length the filter adds was not necessary to store them. ??
The cigarette ashtray measures 13" long x 5" wide. The covered cigarette holder is 5" wide x 6 1/2" long.
This set is in excellent condition as far as I can tell. There are a few small pottery dimples under the glaze on the bottom. These are 2 truly beautiful pieces that would add elegance to any collection. They are exquisite. (No reserve.) Thank you for browsing Lemon Tree Treasures.
