Hand carved –from Turkey--Never smoked. Meerschaum is a German word meaning “sea foam”. Geologists know it as hydrous magnesium silicate. The pipe will turn from beige to red. It will take from 2 to 3 years for the pipe to color, although it depends on the tobaccos that are used and the amount of time smoked. Use tobaccos rich in latakia. Do not cover the pipe with chamois to protect it. The chamois can retard the coloring process. Do not tighten or flush the bit. This will cause the shank to crack. Never ream a meerschaum directly after smoking. Let it dry a day or two before reaming.
