This pair of Wedgwood creamware plates most certainly dates from the early 19th century. The botanical patterns on both are very pleasing and are from Wedgwood's botanical series, circa 1810-1820.
On the back of one plate is handpainted the following words:
Geranium Nivules and Gilanthus ? Nivules
The other plate has the following handpainted
words:
Crocus Bilflorus and Epigea? Nofrens?
Condition: The first plate mentioned above is in excellent condition. There are no cracks, chips, lines, repairs, or stains. The gilt rim has only a tiny amount of wear. The glaze is shiny, noting moderate underglaze crazing. This can be reasonably expected with items of this age.
The second plate is in fair condition. It has an approximately 2 inch in length crack that protrudes through both sides. Other than that condition issue, this plate is in good shape.
A beautiful addition to your addition of early and fine Staffordshire!
