LOVELY EUROPEAN JUGENDSTIL CAKE KNIFE
Typical of the tension between form and design that evolved in Europe around 1900, the traditional pointed antique form of this cake knife and its sculptural, floral decoration combine in a pleasing silver handle which is complemented by an elegantly simpler gold-washed blade with light engraving. The handle is marked only with a small stamp '800' which doesn't conform to most Continental guarantee marks other than, perhaps, Italy. The silk-lined case, which shows some superficial wear, has the name of the Hirsau (Switzerland) retailer, Aug. Zoelper. Condition is excellent – no scratches, dents or stains to the handle, although the underside of the blade has a light mark consistent with a liquid spot which does not penetrate the gold wash (see pic). The knife is 10.25 in., and the case is 11-3/8 x 2-3/4 x 1-3/8 in.
