ABOUT: Rare and Beautiful Sterling silver Chatelaine or watch fob clip by Tiffany & Company during their Union Square period with Aesthetic Daisy designs. Incredible detail! The floral stems are applied and gold washed which provides a nice accent against the sterling silver. There are three little flowers soldered to the chain that are also gold washed and decrease in size as they make their way down the chain (please see condition notes below). The loops are soldered smooth into one continuous piece of silver, no creases or cracks appear weakening the links, which is one of the signs of Tiffany's high end production methods. Swivel clasps at the top of the clip and a spring loaded swivel clasp at the bottom to attach to any chatelaine attachment. The pattern number on the hallmark dates the piece to 1870-1874 according to Carpenter's book on Tiffany silver. Beautiful and important Tiffany & Co. object of virtu that could be worn, or displayed in a prestigious Sterling Silver collection. HALLMARKS: Piece is marked on the back of the clip "Tiffany & Co. 2782 Sterling M 1162 Union Square" MEASUREMENTS: Nice size, Piece measures about 6 1/4 inches in length. It weighs 30 grams of solid silver. IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES: Two gold washed daisies are soldered / connected to the two adjacent chains but the smallest daisy on the chain links closest to the clasp is only soldered on one side and has become separated from the 2nd chain link. It looks like the bottom of the two chain links was originally soldered to create a V shape to hold the smallest daisy in the center, but now the two links move independently from each other. Not terribly noticeable and doesn't affect the usefulness of the item but I wanted to mention it. The circle link attaching to the spring loaded clasp seems slightly out of round. I think the top swiveling loop that is attached to the top of the chatelaine clip may have been done after market and not original to the piece as the loop is more flat, has some solder marks and does not appear to be the same thickness. There are some nicks and scratches on some of the links and some scratches on the smooth back of the chatelaine clip above the hallmark. Surface wear and scratches from use and polish over the last almost 150 years. Lightly hand polished with Tiffany polish with some age appropriate tarnish around the applied decorations which I think adds depth, but could be cleaned up further. So as with all my estate pieces, please note this is not a mint condition item. Lots of years left in this highly collectible and special item.
