This fine Fuchs Austro Hungarian scale represents a fascinating history and place in time. Fuchs.
We were not able to trace the exact metal-smith that produced the fine scale, but the search brought up
many named Fuchs that read like a who's-who of the finest of Budapest-Hungary and indeed the
Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Time Line. The Habsburg Empire - Austro-Hungary. 1867 to just before 1914 is the story of this
scale. Each side face front of the scale has the Greek goddess Athena called Minerva by the Romans,
which was used as the mark of the Austro-Hungarian coin known as a Korona / Krone 1892-1918. The
brass center medallion with the Fuchs name looks like a symbol of a coin in shape and beaded rim.
Minerva is also noted as the mark of Austro-Hungarian sterling silver. If this is the scales original
function, it may be older to 1867.
Marks as could be read.
Scale Brass center medallion - FUCHS G. - MER (Or MAR) YAR - BUDAPEST. Center Engraved into
the metal - F.G. - 10K. Brass button left (on under carriage) - 53 with Symbols of a scale w/ triangle
weight & square weights. Brass button right (on under carriage) - 312-907.
Pan Large - Engraved, RP. - AUT. - VJ - NO 19243 - TUKY. 1 / Also many R symbols.
Pan Small - Engraved, P5 & Symbol (?) - NO - Symbol - 0480 - Center Sq. Symbol with #’s 5
under and 3 on the side. GARAI - ADAD.
Dimensions
Scale @ approximately 15 pounds w/ pans - 17.5" Long x 6" Deep x 9" to top of raised finial.
Large pan, 2.5" Tall x 7.5" Base.
Small Pan, 1.5" Tall x 7" Base.
Condition. Please see pictures. Rustic. The scale was purchased for it's aged beauty not the ability to function
accurately. It may (?) with adjustment. The scale is a long survivor of much and shows time travel in
the form of being rusted. We have very light sanded and oiled well with linseed oil to protect the scale.
One clip holding one of the under arms is missing and has a wire securing it. Additional buffing and /
or dip tank treatment to further restore would be the design judgment of the new owner.
Pans. Brass with rolled rims. Dents and wear associated with age. The pans have been light cleaned but
not polished or buffed to a shine. No weights for the pans.
