Made c1753-60 -- 2-5/8"-tall cylinder opens on hinged cover to disclose steel grater, name of original owner, E.Keele, and the name of his home, Sarum, which is still located on State Rte 234 near Newport, MD. Patterson's mark -- I (pellet) P -- is struck inside the grater's cap.

Until recently, Pattison was located in research books as working in Annapolis, MD, c1750. Then, Catherine Hollan published her work on Virginia silversmiths. There was Pattison, relocated to Fredericksburg...

Oval-end fiddle handle, c1834 -- pointed shoulders, reverse tipt, large unusual circular drop on bowl back, ornate feathered script mono AWC on front; 13-1/2" long, 3-1/2" round bowl. Minty condition throughout.

val-end handle, c1790 -- drop on back of bowl, light reverse rib, feathered script mono B O on front. Long slender handle extending 14-7/8" and ending with 3-3/4" oval bowl.

Until recently, this JG mark was unknown, or attributed elsewhere. Then, a few years ago, Catherine Hollan published her excellent volume on Virginia silversmiths, and there the questions were resolved.

This piece was probably made in Philadelphia, c1815-20, after the dynamic duo had left Boston. It has a downturned fiddle handle, square shoulders, an oversized drop on the bowl back, and a reverse rib on the back of the handle. Mono is MSA in a feathered script on front of the handle. An oval bowl is 4-14" at its widest point. The ladle is quite hefty -- over 6.5 T oz. Condition is minty.
