Marked O.PINI -- probably Italian -- brightcutting and wrigglework design entire length of handle, with flower just below cartouche with bird. Script mono L A just below birds. Length is 5-1/8", with drop on bowl back and reverse tip. Condition of both spoons is near-mint.

Fancy that: an 18th-century coin silver spoon probably made in Italy half a century or more before Italy was born.

This piece was probably made in Philadelphia, c1815-20, after the dynamic duo had left Boston. It has a downturned fiddle handle, square shoulders, an oversized drop on the bowl back, and a reverse rib on the back of the handle. Mono is MSA in a feathered script on front of the handle. An oval bowl is 4-14" at its widest point. The ladle is quite hefty -- over 6.5 T oz. Condition is minty.

val-end handle, c1790 -- drop on back of bowl, light reverse rib, feathered script mono B O on front. Long slender handle extending 14-7/8" and ending with 3-3/4" oval bowl.

Until recently, this JG mark was unknown, or attributed elsewhere. Then, a few years ago, Catherine Hollan published her excellent volume on Virginia silversmiths, and there the questions were resolved.

Oval-end handle, c1795 -- raised pointed drop, reverse tipt, feathered script mono J E S on front; 8-3/4" long. Condition is excellent. Pseudo marks (as shown) are a sunburst and a lion, both upside down in relation to A&R mark. NOTE: beaded edge, the first flatware pattern, originated in England in the 18thC. This is perhaps the first U.S. example of the pattern. It became common here, of course, in the 1830s and beyond.
