val-end handle, c1790 -- drop on back of bowl, light reverse rib, feathered script mono B O on front. Long slender handle extending 14-7/8" and ending with 3-3/4" oval bowl.

Until recently, this JG mark was unknown, or attributed elsewhere. Then, a few years ago, Catherine Hollan published her excellent volume on Virginia silversmiths, and there the questions were resolved.

Oval-end handle, c1795 -- raised pointed drop, reverse tipt, feathered script mono J E S on front; 8-3/4" long. Condition is excellent. Pseudo marks (as shown) are a sunburst and a lion, both upside down in relation to A&R mark. NOTE: beaded edge, the first flatware pattern, originated in England in the 18thC. This is perhaps the first U.S. example of the pattern. It became common here, of course, in the 1830s and beyond.

Pointed-end handle, narrow pointed-arch drop on bowl back, brightcutting and roulette work half-way down handle, feathered script mono L M N in cartouche on front. Length is 9-3/4". Weight is a hefty 15 T oz. Condition is mint -- extended bowl tips unworn. Sayre learned his trade on Long Island. By the turn of the century, he had moved on to NYC.

Featheredged oval-end handle, c1780 -- reverse tipt, shaded block mono M P on front; 4-7/8" in length. New England birdbacks are rarely seen, CT even rarer, Fairchild being the only CT maker with his mark on a birdie that we've seen. Condition of the spoon is excellent. One wishes that Master Fairchild had exercised a bit more exuberance when striking the bird, but, as they say, it is what it is, which ain't bad.

Short front rib, 7-lobe shell drop, never engraved, 3-3/4" long. Only one is marked -- N (pellet) L, as shown. Condition of both is excellent. There were 2 Nathaniels in the Lang family of silversmiths. The first, 1736-64, was the son of Jeffrey; the second, 12757-1824, was the son of Jeffrey's brother, Richard. No doubt, these spoons were made by the second, c1770-80.

Made by Edward Lang, Salem, Mass., c1770, for Susanna Bernon (1716-1802), the daughter of a prominent Hugenot family. Her initials and name are inscribed on the backs of the handles (see pic). The spoons themselves are in excellent condition, with a deep front rib. Length is 5-5/8".
