Oval-end handle, c1795 -- raised pointed drop, reverse tipt, feathered script mono J E S on front; 8-3/4" long. Condition is excellent. Pseudo marks (as shown) are a sunburst and a lion, both upside down in relation to A&R mark. NOTE: beaded edge, the first flatware pattern, originated in England in the 18thC. This is perhaps the first U.S. example of the pattern. It became common here, of course, in the 1830s and beyond.

Both examples are remarkably similar -- 0val-end handles, c1790 -- shell drops on bowl backs (see pic), reverse ribs, and both with the same mono, block D over W * H. The difference in the shell drops is quite clear; the difference in the monos is very slight. Both spoons are just short of 4-1/2" in length. The Ewing mark is less well known, but is confirmed here with the addition of the Haverstick mark. (See p...

Oval-end handle, c1800 -- feathered script mono T H C on front; 8-1/2" long. This spoon is also marked IWG for John Ward Gethen, also of Philly, which presents a bit of a puzzle. Both Black and Gethen were silversmiths, the first starting his career in 1795, the latter in 1811. It could be that Gethen added the piece to his inventory and sold it out of his shop. The spoon is in excellent condition, the extended bowl tip unworn...
