Both examples are remarkably similar -- 0val-end handles, c1790 -- shell drops on bowl backs (see pic), reverse ribs, and both with the same mono, block D over W * H. The difference in the shell drops is quite clear; the difference in the monos is very slight. Both spoons are just short of 4-1/2" in length. The Ewing mark is less well known, but is confirmed here with the addition of the Haverstick mark. (See p...

New England picturebacks are extremely rare -- none moreso than Rhode Island birds. Only Burr is known to have produced birdback spoons. The bird on this piece is in bold relief, all of its parts intact. The spoon itself has a pointed-end handle with a clearly defined reverse rib. The mono is C * H in shaded block letters, and the length is 5-1/4". The mark is E (pellet) BURR. The bowl tip has a bit of wear, otherwise the overall condition is excellent.

16" tall, 13" across base, 74 Troy oz. We understand that this piece was designed at the Tiffany studio in the 1960s and that it was fabricated in Italy. What better home base for a campanile!

As shown, the body consists of 8 S-scroll vertical straps on 8 ball feet. Two horizontal straps are connected to the vertical strip with silver rivets. Atop the body is an onion-shaped dome, formed by another 8 S-scroll straps...

Downturned fiddle handle, no shoulders, drop, shaded old English S on front; 5-1/2" long. Condition is excellent. Franciscus worked in Baltimore from 1810-18, and from 1819-40 in Lancaster, PA. These spoons are fully marked with a shield, the dominical letter A (which denotes 1815 as the year it was made), and the head of liberty. It is rare to find Franciscus silver so clearly associated with Baltimore, the city of his birth.

Interesting double-swell fiddle handles, unusual for midwest and southern silver; pointed shoulders, feathered script mono I S B on front; 5-7/8" in length. Excellent condition. Boultinghouse lists William and Archibald Cooper as forming their partnership in 1836 in Cincinnati, probably moving across the river to Louisville the next year.
