The wreath pattern came into existence in Philadelphia about the same time as the sheaf-of-wheat and basket-of-flowers patterns. It never caught on outside Philly. Each of these 5 is in near-mint condition, the wreath crisp, the bowl tips unworn. The mono is L H F in feathered script. They have pointed shoulders and there is a drop on the bowl back. Length is 6".

Probably made in the year of its patent - 1871. The set consists of 12 dinner forks, 12 luncheon forks, 12 tablespoons, 12 dessert spoons and 12 teaspoons -- a total of 60 pieces with a weight of 77 T oz. This is a copy of the original by John Dixwell of Boston, who died in 1725 at age 45. Original is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see pix of inscriptions on bottom of cup). This piece was made in the 1940s. It is 3-1/4" high x 2-7/8" diameter at flared rim. Weight is a solid 6 T oz. It has an S-scroll reeded strap handle and a reeded band at the base. It is engraved Alana June in script on the front. Condition is excellent throughout.

This particular pictureback seems to be unique with David. The flower is contained within an ornate scroll cartouche. The image is in excellent condition, retaining its original crispness. So too with the spoon itself: the extended bowl tip is unworn, the oval-end handle having a prominent reverse rib, and with the feathered script mono M L on the front.

Marked PITMAN in serrated rectangle, one of the marks used by Saunders Pitman of Providence. Yet Saunders died in 1804 - he couldn't have made this spoon. Then who? His son, John K. Pitman, who was trained by his dad, worked with his pop, and simply continued to use the "family punch." Son Pitman is listed in the Flynt & Fales tome on New England silversmiths, but no mark is attributed to him. This is it! Plus, probably, all the other marks attributed to Saunders...
