This magnificently Carved Seashell was bought in Hawaii before World War 2. A brother of a man who died in the Arizona brought it back as a souvenir. He went to visit his brother stationed in Hawaii and after he came back to the U.S. the Japanese invaded Hawaii. The man’s Sister told this to me as she was selling his estate.
The carving portrays two Dragons (one on each side of the shell) they have a ball between them with the Chinese Character of FU (meaning explained below) in a circle or ball. Very intricate work as you can see the scales on the dragons’ body and feet. The eyes of the Dragons are red. The carved seashell is mounted on a smaller shell for the base. It could be used as a T. V. or night light. EXCELLENT CONDITION
Fu - Blessing, Good Fortune, Good Luck
Fu is one of the most popular Chinese characters used in Chinese New Year. It is often posted upside down on the front door of a house or an apartment. The upside down fu means good luck came since the character for upside down in Chinese sounds the same as the character for came.
