This is a wonderful rare antique Victorian book titled "Christmas Stories for Boys and Girls". It is published by The Grand Union Tea Company some time between circa 1885 and 1903. The inside front cover has a child's name and date Dec. 23, 1903 and a town in Pennsylvania in pencil. So this book is over 100 years old. It has 3 of these wonderful color lithographs on the inside and the gorgeous ones on the front and back cover. It also has numerous black printed illustrations on every page that accompany the stories and poems. It has approx. 216 pages just full of wonderful images of animals, children, and much more. The book measures 9.75 by 7.75 inches. There is wear to the outside cover, edges a bit rough, but still pretty. The cover is separated from the book, but it just needs re-glued, but I don't have the knowledge to do that. Two of the pages have slits down them, but all the pieces are still held partly in place, not all the way through, and could be mended. The pages themselves don't even look like they have been read, there are no bends on the pages, there is browning because of the type of paper that was used.
I found out that the Grand Union Tea Company of Brooklyn Borough, New York was some sort of store outlet and used these books as sales promotional perks. The presswork looks hand done, because the inks are lighter, and darker in places. The books is held together by huge staples that go all the way through the pages.
This is a wonderful rare old book. The little children on the front are chubby little cherub looking toddlers, on the back minstrel clowns in lovely shades of red and white.
It has no date or copyright on it, but I would assume it is a first edition, I am not certain though.
