A good coin silver porringer, with a shallow bowl of curved sides, lined with a row of fine
bead-work, fitted with a pierced handle. The top of the handle bears a contemporary monogram
of WJB, while on the underneath is the early mark of Wood & Hughes.
The firm was originally formed in 1833 in the name of Gale, Wood & Hughes, becoming Wood &
Hughes in 1845 after William Gale retired. According to some references the W&H mark was
used since 1833.

I have had numerous small mugs from the Georgian period but never one of this form, and never one that could be described as a child's mug.It has cute applied borders and an attractive cast handle. Never been inscribed. Visible construction seam by the handle and a turned base.
It has some intriguing scratched figures on the base, some small but all very light, that probably pertain to the construction. The most prominent is: 914 = 5" 7 dw. I am not sure of the 914 but 5" 7 dw wou ...click for details
An aesthetically pleasing repousse sterling tray, oval in form on an oval foot, with twin-looped naturalistic handles. The central oval clearing has an interesting crest of intertwined sprigs of a rose and a thistle. Seems to suggest an alliance, or marriage, of Scotland and England.
In very good condition. Good clear repousse decoration. Marked S. Kirk & Son., 11 oz, for the period 1880-90.
Dimensions: 13.25" long, 8" wide. Weight 18 Troy oz.
A short squat repousse 11oz silver julep cup by S.Kirk & Son., with an inscription for 1883.
All over floral decoration with acanthus leaves along the base.
Good condition. A bit worn but it is a very rare form.
Dimensions: 3.25" high, 3.25" diameter. Weight 4.44 Troy oz.
Here is a wonderful Medallion coin silver asparagus tongs in very good condition. Not even a monogram. Engraving still sharp, showing no excessive wear. The medallions could be identified and thence the silversmith, there were only a handful. But that is pretty subjective and I don't wish to claim that authority.
Dimensions: 10.5" long, 2.1" at its widest. Weight: 5.2 Troy oz.
A good coin silver fiddle pattern butter knife by James Conning of Mobile, Alabama made about 1840. Scrolled monogram which appears to be "B McL".
Readable marks, except that Mobile has lost the last three letters through wear.
Slight surface abrasions.
Length: 7.6".
This must be a Charleston form as this is the third goblet of this form and decoration I have had from Charleston. This one is a bit later, with marks, pictured, for A.H.Hayden who, with W.G.Whilden, represented the last partnership of this dynasty which began in 1838 with his brothers Nathaniel and Sidney. This last partnership ended in 1863 when Hayden was in the Confederate Army and they subsequently set up business separately. This goblet must then date from about 1865 onwards.

A small sterling meat platter, of fairly plain form but with a few accents that indicate the work of the grand master, Paul Storr. Oval in form with a reeded border highlighted with shell motifs. Fully hallmarked, including his maker' mark and the date letter, B, for the period July 1797 to May 1798. Up to 1973 the Date Letter was changed each year on the 19th May (later 28th May), which was St. Dunstan's day. He is the patron saint of English silversmiths.

A very good pair of sterling George III candlesticks made in Sheffield by Samuel Kirkby & Co in 1804. Attractive fluted decoration between the circular bases and the cylindrical columns. What is nice about these candlesticks are the clear hallmarks on the bases and on the bobeches. Very good condition.
Dimensions: 7" high, 4.5" base diameter.
It is amazing that this set has survived intact, almost, all these years through the ravages of history and the Civil War. The set comprises a finely engraved slice and twelve spoons with fluted bowls, all with spiral stems. There is a fitted box but its not in the best of health these days. It is missing one end but the hinge is and it does shut.
All the pieces are in wonderful condition except for a hairline crack about 0.25" long and a couple of dings in the bowl of one spoon. The damag ...click for details
