$3850

A very large and early water pitcher of fine bulbous form, plain apart from a mask on a fluted handle, and the inscribed name 'Swan'. Made by William Forbes for Ball, Tomkins & Black, both of NY, NY. Pristine condition and very good patina. Must have come from a good home. Interesting form and decoration but on the mask I have found absolutely no literature. Measures 10.75" tall and weighs 30 T.oz.

It looks earlier than I have dated it but the closest I have come to identifying the maker's mark, S.W & Co, is a reference in Belden to Samuel White of NY, NY, whose mark is S.W, being in a partnership forming a company S.White & Co between 1820-25. To be honest I am not sure what it is for but it is a beautiful piece of handwrought sterling by Lebolt. It comes in three pieces: the main pot, of '1 Pint' capacity, with ivory insulators, for, I presume, the hot chocolate or coffee; a smaller pot with just a sterling handle, which presumably is for the milk and then, lastly, the lid. Each piece is fully marked with the Lebolt logo, Lebolt, Handbeaten, Sterling, #281, while the main pot has, in addition, 1Pint. 5.25" total height. ...click for details
