These are a fabulous pair of candelabra. The detail and workmanship are superb. You can see why Christofle dominated the industry in France since the mid-19th century. The column of each candlestick is held together with a nut in the base. It looks like each of these nuts has been replaced, but you cannot see them anyway. Perfect apart from that. Marked under the base as shown. 12" high, 10" across arms, 5" canted square bases.

These early tapersticks have become extremely rare. This one is fully hallmarked underneath but the Date Letter is unreadable as it was poorly struck. The cartouches of the marks are c.1740 and the maker, Richard Gosling, started work in 1739, so it is, unquestionably, of that period. It is in very fine condition with a nice crest. 4" high, 2.5" wide at the base.

The Birmingham Guild of Handicraft was founded in 1895 by the architect Arthur Dixon. They specialised in the Arts & Crafts style, simple designs without any undue ornamentation, with a hammered finish. This finish was adopted as a signature of the Arts & Crafts style in later years. Note the year, 1895, and the date of this tankard, 1904. This firm and their associate C.R. Ashbee, who founded the Guild of Handicraft in London, were probably the earliest exponents of this genre.
