Coin silver goblet, Hayden & Whilden, Charleston, S.C.

A handsome goblet with repousse decoration to the body, a beaded rim and a gadrooned lobed foot. Excellent condition. A later inscription on the foot reads: "IN LOVING MEMORY OF HELEN LEE, CHARLESTON, S.C." 10-27-1873 5-20-1951 Fully marked on the base: Hayden & Whilden, Charleston, S.C., G&W, 17, English Sterling 925-1000. Although it dates from the Coin period before the Sterling standard was adopted, it is actually made of English Sterling, 925-1000, by Gale & Willis for Hayden & Whilden (1855-63) of Charleston. This last partnership of the firm which was originally founded in 1838 by Nathaniel and Sidney Hayden and William Greg was between Agustus Hayden (younger brother) and W.G.Whilden. It was terminated in 1863 when Augustus Hayden joined the Confederate Army. After the war they went their separate ways. There were several successful partnerships over a period of 30 years.
