This three-legged sterling sugar bowl is typically Irish and is a form that has been used since about 1730. This one was made about 1775. I cannot be more precise as, also typically Irish, it was hallmarked without the date letter.
It was made by that renowned Dublin silversmith, Matthew West, whose career began in 1762 when he started his 7 year apprenticeship, to his uncle John West. On completing his apprenticeship he became a Freeman in 1769, then a Master in 1783. He died in 1806 after a long illustrious spell.
The bowl is engraved with a crest on one side and a scrolling monogram, AMC on another, while the base has pricked initials, MC, next to the hallmarks.
In very good condition. No damage or repairs.
