Item #USIN36

Here are a pair of large Sheffield crested domes with matching platters made about 1830. Now these are real Sheffield plate, i.e fused sterling and copper sheets, made before electricity enabled cheaper silver plated (electroplated) goods to be manufactured. They have the lapped edges, formed when the top layer of sterling is hammered over the edge to hide the copper layer. They also have the sterling square set into the copper sheet. You can just detect the faint outline around the crests. The purpose of this was when the crest or coat of arms was engraved the copper would not show. The domes have the coat of arms engraved on both sides, while the platter has the crest engraved on one side Although identical in design, they are slightly different in sizes. These domes were usually made in sets of graduated sizes, depending on their use, ie the food being served. Over the years these sets have been split and dispersed amongst families, so it is extremely rare to find a full set or even a partial set. The condition is surprisingly good considering the age and their function. Some slight scratching to the base of the platters and a couple of minor dings to the domes. Some very minor areas of discoloration and loss of plate but hardly noticeable. On the whole the plating is in very good condition with good patina. No repairs. Dimensions: 1. 22.5" long x 17.75" wide x 13.5" high. 2. 21" long x 16" wide x 12.5" high.
