Very nice AP press photo dated 1943. One cool aspect of this one is he cover page which warns CAUTION! WATCH RELEASE DATE! Very cloak-and-dagger. This was taken during one of the Russian winter offensives of early 1943 near Veronezh. The tank is advancing past anti-tank gunners dug into the snow. Russian infantry can be seen riding on the back...

Small plaque with profile bust of Helmuth James Graf von Moltke. Moltke was a very forward thinking Field Marshall. At the top of this piece is a famous quote of his "Erst Wagen Dann Wagen" the meaning of which translates to "First you leap". His main theory being that one should attack strongly but never to plan to deeply past the point where contact is made. Since there are simply too many possibilities and varying factors it does no good to over plan to far into the future of a conflict...

Wonderfully made naval cannon made from wood from the U.S Frigate Constitution. This frigate, of course, was famous for some very famous successes against highly skilled British ships in the war of 1812. When the ship was overhauled in 1927 the old wood was made into souvenirs and sold to the public (Imagine that happening today?)...

Nice AP press photo showing bomb bursts bracketing Russian tank. Description says this was in the defense of Stalingrad. Bracketing is an effective way of zeroing in on a target and probably effectively scares the living hell out of the crew inside of a tank. There is a small tear bottom left from where it was removed from an album or other mounting. The fold in the description page is half separated along the crease but this would display better if this was removed anyway...

Great AP press photo titled End Of A Tank. This is from July 1943. The AP description explains this was a German press photo obtained through a neutral country and reports that a German soldier placed explosive charge between turret and tank body. The turret was blown off and sits upside down in the snow beside the still burning hull. This is a brave act bordering on suicidal but was actually considered almost routine for well trained and disciplined German infantry. About 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches.

Very nice 1914 Iron Sross 2nd class. Ring is hallmarked M . Condition of the medal is top notch and just where collectors like to see it; Very clean, undamaged and smooth but just enough very gentle aging where it is obviously real and with some personality. Nice, crisp black core and nicely toned silver frame. Original ribbon nicely folded. These have long been undervalued and are becoming a hot item with the hundredth anniversary of WWI. Top notch example of a classic medal.

Nice Elastolin figure. Searching the sky with binoculars with a map and pistol holster in his belt. Very light cracking to wrists and some to base. Seems something always gives as these dry out. Nice figure.

Nice 1943 dated WWII Associated Press photo. Titled "U.S. Paratrooper Bail Out Over Sicily" with appropriate photo. These came from family whose father was a newspaper editor in Connecticut. Bottom left shows logo of Signal Corps Radio Telephoto. Just about 6.5x7.5 inches. Nice item.

old walrus tusk with strange billiken carving. While usually represented as a smiling cherub type creature this face is more haunting and menacing. It is also less invasivly carved into the tusk which otherwise keeps its natural shape. A little bit around the back side and below the face is a signature or maker mark. A hole at the smoothed off base indicates that this was once mounted on something. Very interesting piece. Just under nine inches in length.

Cool patriotic envelope showing Uncle Sam's show stepping on the caricature heads of Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo with the title STAMP 'EM OUT! Mailed to Staten Island in 1943. A bit of the flap on the rear right is sealed but the artwork, of course, remains funny artwork.

Luftschutz sleeve patch. This is a classic patch featuring the 88mm flak artillery gun. One of the best guns of the war the 88 was an effective antiaircraft gun but was also a first rate tank killer when lowered and shooting over opened sites. One nip on the upper edge and another just southeast of that. Small spot of discoloration on the right wingtip.

Very hard to find KDF tinnie. Kraft Durch Freude was a state run recreational organization designed to give working families the opportunity to take vacations they would not normally be able to afford. The not so bad plan was to raise the moral of German workers but also to show the outside world how happy the new German workers were who were bringing Germany out of its post WWII depression...

Nice 1st Class Iron Cross by 26. This indicates the maker B.H. Mayer. Does show a healthy patina from age and wear. I think it looks great as is but certainly could be cleaned up by someone who prefers. I like crosses in this condition that show the halo on the outer edge of the core along the silver beading. I don't believe this can be reproduced and is something I always like to see. Cross gently convex in shape. Nice, honest example.

Nice little German bicycle club. Central emblem shows a bicycle over the black white ad red national colors, below which reads ALL HEIL. Nice gilt oak leaf wreath around the bicycle. The back piece is a large ribbon with oak leaves and acorns. The silver wash on this back ribbon is well worn but all in all an interesting and attractive pin. Construction typical of 1920's to early 1930's.

Interesting Japanese collar insignia. It took me a while to figure out exactly what this was but finally found it in my Nakata book. Of course I am not sure if my translation is perfectly accurate but it seems to be collar insignia for cadets at officer training school and would go along with the usual rectangular rank insignia with stripes and stars. I was not able to find any similar examples offered for sale. Nice bullion wreath with metal star affixed in center. Apparently a scarce item.
