19c Bavarian Hunting Trophy - Presentation German Horn
Very cool, very large horn. This is a German hunting trophy with textbook Bavarian edelweiss motif. The inscription reads "Gewidmet v. d. beiden Revisoren Hans Fischer w. Clement Hakerl" or something like "Dedicate to the two Auditors Hans Fischer and Clement Hakerl. Translations are funny but I believe these fellows were probably more like game wardens then auditors. At any rate, it is a beautiful horn with nice, flowing dedication. The end cap with the dedication is heavily decorated with eidelweiss giving it that wonderful Bavarian hunting feel. Green cord is a bit tired and untied on one end but is certainly original to the horn. I would leave it as is but it could be retied or even replaced with a curtain tie off. The tip is still closed so this may even have been a drinking horn (How much beer can a Bavarian fit into one serving?). Besides the expected gentle age wear I find one very old crack tucked under the eidelweiss leaves with about 3.5cm showing. This is hard to notice and if it is noticed I think it just adds a little character. I believe this dates well into the 1800's. Hard to measure but about 20 inches from end to end but as it is so heavily curved this measurement doesn't really do it justice. Just a lovely unique piece that really brings you back to "Old Germany".
