Bavarian Shako Helmet w Horse Hair Plume - WWI German
Interesting Bavarian shako with a very attractive horse hair plume. I am not sure of the exact use or designation of this piece but it is definitely an old example. Considering the age the plume is in great shape (See images). Nicely detailed brass Bavarian plate on the front. Officer's metal scale chin strap with Bavarian style lion rivets. There is one officer's type cockade on the wearer's left. There are a few modifications that have been made but this is nothing terribly alarming as this type of headgear was altered due to changing regulations or even unit transfers. Above each lion is an old mounting hole for some other device. There is also evidence that at one time this helmet was configured with a rear spine. There is also one extra hole above the two mounting rivets of the front plate. Sometimes these helmets have been altered spuriously to add value by assigning rare insignia. I do not think that is the case with this example as none of the changes are anything that would add much, if any, value. There is a whole, strange science behind these types of headgear so if anyone has any input on this I would love to hear it. I think this is an honest, period altered shako with a really cool parade plume.
