| Interesting SS dagger by F.A. Helbig. As a transitional it also has the RZM code 1163/38SS which are the correct marks for this dagger. The negatives begin and end with the spotting on the blade. The blade is still buttery smooth with no pitting but the mid section on each side shows the freckly mottling that indicates the blade was kept in a humid place too long. While the oxidation did freckle the blade finish it did not eat into the metal as there is no pitting. The blade is clear at the bottom and again at the tip and cross graining is in evidence on these areas. Blade is unsharpened and the point has its proper shape so really not a terrible example that seats nicely onto the crossguard. From there it is all positive. The handle is unchipped with only very minimal signs of aging and meets the crossguards nicely. Inset eagle and SS roundels are really nice examples. The top of the hexagonal nut shows oxidation that clears towards the bottom of that part. The crossguards are excellent with no plating issues and (Again) meet the wood handle quite nicely. The scabbard is a beauty, and for damage to the original paint one must look very closely to the edges were a couple of small spots are evident. I am humble but would still call this paint 99%+. There are also the very light halos that we like to see against the plated metal fittings. The fittings (Drag and throat) are both as near perfect and a perfect match for the crossguard fittings. Ball is undamaged and screws appear to be unturned. As a last nice bonus the belt hanger is present with a nice black finish and arked SS 68/38 RZM. The 1938 date matches that on the dagger blade and the condition of the leather goes nicely with the great condition of the blade. I would really be surprised if these haven't been together since 1938. Hanger clip is Assman marked A DRGM RZM M5/8. Really a lovely example with a good personality. | |||||||||||||||
