On first sight one would think that due to simple physics only a dummy would have a square coffee cup. I found Bill O'Hara online and it is clear that he was no dummy. Bill O'Hara left school early to join the merchant marines in WWII where he served in Europe and the Phillipine Sea. He later joined the U.S. Army and was in the Korean conflict early, being awarded a purple heart for wound in 1950. After 20 years active duty he retired in 1960 and even after retirement worked in both Korea and Vietnam. He later put his engineering skills to good use working on the Naval Subbase Bangor and was the Director of Transportation for a NASA installation at Wallops Is., VA. This goes far in explaining the USN and naval submarine emblems on the mug as well as the NASA pin which I believe is real gold. I also believe the mug itself is related to his work and the square piece is probably an equipment cap of some sort. The handle looks like a cable or hose anchoring ring. Neat personal item from a man that dedicated his entire life working for his country in both the US Navy, US Army and NASA, sadly passing away in 1008 after a productive 80 year life.
