| Just a wonderful and historically important item. As everyone reading this would know, the German military was forbidden an air force by the Versailles Treaty. To get around this and keep flight as a point of interest with young Germans the government established glider clubs through the DLV and later the NSFK. Gliders became a national obsession and this obsession assured that aircraft theory and design would not wither and die and that Germany would have a well established pool of potential pilots when the time came. It might even be argued that learning flight in gliders may have actually made for more intuitive pilots with a greater understanding of flight. In this photo album the DLV logo can be seen here and there on trucks towing gliders and on buildings. Only a few uniforms (Plenty of service uniforms with minimal insignia) and interesting armbands are visible but the album in whole gives a wonderfully accurate idea of the level of passion put into the "hobby". It shows gliders in close detail from different nations with varying insignia at either "meets" or competitions. There are photos of gliders in flight, being launched, caught in trees and even one crashed upside down on a rocky hilltop. There are innumerable photos of the fellows discussing, designing and working on the aircraft. One telling photo sequence (Included below) shows the young members working on some small detail related to a glider and the next shows them apparently on the way home all asleep in the car. You can honestly feel their enthusiasm and dedication through the photos and it was extremely difficult for me to choose 12 images for this listing. There are almost 70 with only one wasted on the cat the must have lived in the workshop. I do believe this is a historically important album. | |||||||||||||||
