K98 Bahnschutz Bayonet w Troddel - Railway Protection
Very rare Bahnschutz bayonet (Railway protection police) and troddel. Marked Bz.15.B.153. I believe that the "15" makes this from the Koln district. The blade is easily near mint. The wood on the handle has the usual, but very minor and few, pings and dings that such soft wood accumulates over the decades but is very healthy so that even the original wood striping is very evident. The handle fittings are also in top condition with a minimal degree of spotting that is also to be expected and most wouldn't even mention. Being an early example of a specialized bayonet, there are not the usual waffenamts. The attached troddel shows the expected pleasant age toning. There are no signs of damage or weak spots; Just a marvelous example of a rare knot. The scabbard also shows minimal wear and has no pings, dings or dents. It has a 4 digi9t accountability number 6321. I don't know if these bayonets are supposed to have such numbers but information on this is hard to find. The other side shows no maker name. The frog is complete but sure shows its age. There is a maker name that I can't completely make out and the date 1938. Towards the bottom of the frog is what is probably the recovering veteran's contribution: JRV DEC 1944. Since the frog itself is not in the best of shape these initials and date actually add some flavor to the set. Really a terrific item.
