Prohibition Delegate Medal and Buttons 1912 - RARE
This might be the greatest country on earth but that does not mean we don't periodically do stupid things. For example, Prohibition which made recreational alcohol consumption illegal thus opening the door for the antics of guys like Al Capone. It rarely works out when one tries to impose their morality on others. Prohibition began in 1920. This medal is for a delegate to the Atlantic City NJ Prohibition National Convention of 1912 when this movement was gathering steam. When seeking prohibition material such as this we usually find Franklin Mint pieces and temperance mementos but this is the first time I have seen a real prohibition medal. Good looking medal complete with original ribbon. Both top and bottom pieces as well as the ribbon are all maker marked on the reverse. The medal features a mermaid which is ironic because sober folks usually aren't the ones that see them. Also included are two buttons. The larger is from the Official registration of the same 1912 convention as the medal. The smaller is from another similar event in Washington in 1927 hosted by the Anti-Saloon League of America. Did those people truly not have anything better to do with their time? Three very nice pieces of early 20th century cultural history.
