WWI German Army Entrenching Tool w Leather Cover
Some items are cool beyond their value and this is one of this pieces where we say "Oh if it could talk...". Super looking German entrenching tool (Shovel) that just screams western front trench warfare. The blade has two marks which I take to be a manufacturer mark and military acceptance mark. The date is a little rubbed out but looks like 1915. 1915 is also impressed into the handle wood. The leather blade cover and is also maker marked and dated 1916. The stampings are crisp but I can't make out any of the full manufacturer names. These are not common items and I have only seen a few with the leather. interestingly most are flat tipped as opposed to spade tipped so this leather fitting correctly is a big bonus. Both pieces have the expected wear that I think looks great but none of the leather is broken and it still fits well. Besides being a neat piece of equipment these were highly favored pieces for trench fighting as they didn't need much room to swing and were very effective for that use. The blade being sharpened on this one makes me think this was truly in the thick of things and was likely used for both purposes. Just a superb piece of WWI history.
