A Fine Grouping Of English Majolica Pottery consisting of a Teapot with cover, Sugar with cover, Creamer and Pitcher. In an Aesthetic Movement or Japanesque style. Made by Brownhills Pottery Company of Tunstall, England. The cream color ground is delicately stippled against blossoms and foliage hand painted in the rich shades Pink, Green, Dark Amber accented with Deep Brown Trellis like lines and other stylized lines, circles and squiggles. Handles are designed to resemble Bamboo. All resting on a thatch work base in warm Carmel color.
Each piece is marked on the bottom in hand painted red 1469. The Teapot is also impressed with BPCo (see picture #5 at 9 o'clock) and 26 (see picture #5 at 8 o'clock). This mark was used by Brownhills Pottery Company between 1872 and 1896.
Measurements: Teapot - 9" wide handle to spout, 6 1/2" tall, Sugar - 5" wide, 5 3/8" tall, Creamer - 5" wide handle to spout, 5 3/8" tall, Pitcher - 5 3/4" handle to spout wide, 7 3/8" tall.
Condition : Very Good, looks like these pieces were only displayed and never used. There are NO chips, cracks, hairlines, flakes and most important NO crazing or staining. Due to the nature of Majolica and the hand painting there are small spots of over-paint, shadowing and some of the lines vary in thickness and have skips. All of which make no two pieces the same, thus an air of Exclusivity.
This pattern is pictured in the book "Majolica: A Complete History and Illustrated Survey" by Marilyn Karmason and Joan Stacke on Page 119.
I believe this set has been together all of its life and well loved by its owners. Sold as a set only. We will NOT split up the group. Purchased from a local country estate sale.
