Offered is a nice Southern coin silver teaspoon bearing the mark of James T. Scott & Co., working in Wheeling, Virginia and later West Virginia circa the mid 1850s through the late 1860s. Mr. Scott and his partners seem to have mostly retailed silver, though this bears only his maker's or retailer's mark, and no manufacturer's marks. In my other listings on the site, I have several other spoons, with different monograms but also found around Wheeling, with James T. Scott & Co.'s mark. This sp...

Offered is a very good pair of American coin silver teaspoons by Pottsville, Pennsylvania coin silver jeweler and watchmaker Robert C. Green, whose biographical information appears below. Green's mark is quite uncommon, and these teaspoons each have a clear, well-struck maker's mark, and a pseudo-hallmark or journeyman's mark in the form of a leaf. Each piece also has a period engraved script monogram. These spoons each measure about 5 3/4 inches in length, and the pair weighs a total of abou...

Offered is a rare, early and splendid George III English sterling silver toy spoon or miniature spoon (or possibly a snuff spoon), hallmarked for London, 1791 but without a maker's mark that I can discern. Often such miniature spoons were not fully marked, and were entirely unmarked in some cases. These piece is delightfully decorated with a swaged rococo scroll to the back of the bowl, and is fully engraved in the latest style to the front. This spoon measures about 3 1/8 inches in length an...

Offered is an important and useful reference work on Irish silver - "Collecting Irish Silver" by Douglas Bennett. This book used to be harder to find and is still a cornerstone reference work for antique dealers and collectors. It includes most of the maker's marks of 18th and 19th Century Irish silver - particular Irish provincial silver. This particular copy is in good condition, with normal wear from use but no major issues - clean and bright for the most part inside, and nicely preserved....

Offered is a lovely and extremely rare example of the Old English pattern in the first few years of its development. The first moves away from the Hanoverian pattern were with the larger serving pieces, such as this soup ladle, and with some forks. The primary reason for this shift was the discomfort of using pieces like soup ladles with the turned-up handles of the Hanoverian pattern; the turned-down end of the Old English pattern was simply more comfortable in the hand.

This piece bears ...

Offered is a good early English sterling silver stuffing spoon hallmarked for London, circa 1809 or possibly 1789, and bearing a makers mark of IL, which is probably one of the marks used by John Lias. Offered is a rare example of 19th Century silver from Riga, Latvia, at the time a part of the Russian Empire. This piece is a heavy and well-decorated pair of sugar tongs bearing hallmarks for Riga, 1881. This piece measures about 6 inches in length and weighs a heavy 56 grams or so. This example of a pair of sugar tongs is interesting in that it has a style that is distinct from Russian pieces, but is also distinct from tongs from the Western European countries. It is an attractive pair! T...

Offered is a nice American coin silver salt spoon by Philadelphia silversmith Jacob Stockman, working alone and in partnership circa 1819 to 1850 as a silversmith and pencil and thimble maker, and from 1850-55 as a pencil-maker and jeweler. This spoon probably dates to the 1832-50 period by style; Stockman was working alone during this period and produced much of his work then. This piece bears a rubbed but legible maker's mark and a period engraved script monogram. It measures about 3 3/4 in...

Offered is a great and scarce American coin silver spoon from Montrose, Susquehanna County, PA. This piece bears the mark of the partnership of Bentley & Read, successors to Bentley & Mitchell, who were in turn successors to Asa Hartshorn. Little has been documented about Bentley & Read, but they were active in the 1850s as a fire started in or near their shop in 1854. This piece measures about 5 11/16 inches in length and weighs about 14 grams. Condition is good overall, with modest tip wea...

Offered is a very fine, almost unused copy of what has gotten to be an impossible-to-find foundational reference work on Parisian silversmiths - Catherine Arminjon's "Dictionnaire des poincons de fabricants d'ouvrages d'or et d'argent Paris 1838-1875". Arminjon also published a volume on Paris silversmiths prior to 1838, and both of her books on Paris silversmiths have become very expensive since they went out of print fifteen or twenty years ago. The only copy of this book available on Amazon...

Offered is a good American coin silver sauce or cream ladle measuring about 6 3/8 inches in length and weighing about 32 grams, engraved with an armorial of a hound's head erased, issuing from a coronet. This piece bears the maker's mark of Platt & Brothers, silversmiths of New York City, NY, working circa 1836-46 with a shop at 12 Maiden Lane.
