Baltimore Coin Silver Sugar Tongs Prince Albert Pattern
A pair of American coin silver sugar tongs by Baltimore silversmith Robert J. Brown. Robert J. Brown (1798-1882) was active as a silversmith, watchmaker, and jeweler in Baltimore, Maryland from 1824 to 1880. He worked in the firm Robert Brown & Son from 1849 to 1852. This piece is marked R.BROWN&SON in a rectangle, along with the Baltimore fineness mark and a tradesman's mark of a spade. This pair of tongs is rare in that it is in the Prince Albert pattern. It has an engraved period script monogram of "FJB" and a clear maker's mark. This piece measures about 6 3/8 inches in length and weighs about 46 grams. Condition is good overall, with some surface wear and scratching, but with no dents, splits or repairs. A fine example!
