Lovely Ornate Cast Georgian English Sterling Wine Label Circa 1807
Offered is a fine Georgian English sterling silver wine label or bottle ticket in the "two putti" style, first introduced by Sandilands Drinkwater in the mid-18th Century, and widely copied by 18th and 19th Century specialist label makers thereafter. This piece is hallmarked for 1807, and the maker's mark of J.A may be for Joseph Angell. This piece measures about 2 3/8 inches across and weighs about 28 grams. Condition is very good, although a couple of links in the chain indicate they may be replacements. This piece is made for use with Madeira wine, a popular aperitif or dessert wine from the Portuguese island. All in all a fine example for the collector or as a gift!
