Cream Ladle by Socrates Ayers of Elmira, NY c1836-45, with City Mark
Offered is a good Elmira, NY coin silver cream ladle by silversmith and jeweler Socrates Ayers (1814 - 1897), who worked in Elmira for most or all of his career. This piece is in very good condition, with only modest wear from normal use and no dents, splits or repairs. It has an unusual maker's mark that incorporates the city mark in the same punch. This piece also features a period engraved script monogram. This ladle measures about 6 1/4 inches in length and weighs about 24 grams. All in all a good usable piece of small-town New York coin silver!
