Late 18th Century Decorated Coffee Spoon by Joseph Moulton III, 4 1/4"
Offered is a nice little early American coin silver coffee spoon or extra small teaspoon by well-known Newburyport, MA silversmith Joseph Moulton III. Although this spoon bears the mark of Joseph Moulton II, he appears to have been working only until around 1780, and his nephew Joseph Moulton III is believed to have used this mark on a number of items. This spoon should date to the 1795-1805 timeframe, give or take a few years on either side. It has a an engraved reserve and period block engraved owners initials, and a good clear maker's mark. The drop is engraved and quite large. As noted, this piece measures about 4 1/4 inches in length (closer to 4 5/16 inches in length). Condition is very good, with moderate tip wear and a few dimples to the bowl, but no splits or repairs. All in all nice usable 18th Century coin silver spoon from a noted silversmithing family!
