Rare Decorated Late 18th Century Teaspoon by Matthias Lamar of Phila.
Offered is a rare early American coin silver teaspoon by late 18th and early 19th Century Philadelphia silversmith Matthias Lamar (or Lemaire), circa 1790-1800, and bearing his full name maker's mark. Mr. Lamar was working in Philadelphia by the early 1780s and died in 1809. His work is uncommon and the full name mark more so. The mark on this spoon was used for the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan - a must have for those who appreciate antique silver! This nicely engraved and decorated spoon has a period script monogram and a good clear maker's mark. It measures about 5 7/16 inches in length and weighs about 10 grams. Condition overall is good, with minor bumps and dings and a little surface wear, but no splits or repairs. All in all a great piece!
