Offered is a great and scarce American coin silver spoon from Montrose, Susquehanna County, PA. This piece bears the mark of the partnership of Bentley & Read, successors to Bentley & Mitchell, who were in turn successors to Asa Hartshorn. Little has been documented about Bentley & Read, but they were active in the 1850s as a fire started in or near their shop in 1854. This piece measures about 5 11/16 inches in length and weighs about 14 grams. Condition is good overall, with modest tip wear and a few tiny dimples, but no major dents and no splits or repairs. The manufacturer's marks and the retailer's mark of Bentley & Read are clear and well-struck. All in all a fine piece of Montrose silver from before the Civil War!
