Offered is one of the most eye-catching and unusual English sterling silver fish slices I've ever seen, let alone come across. Please carefully review all the pictures. This piece is fully hallmarked for London, 1843, and appears to bear a maker's mark used by specialist maker John James Whiting. This fish server has interesting die-struck rococo decoration to the handle, and gorgeous pierced work to the blade, which spells FISH in fancy script. The piercing is so ornate that it takes a moment to register that a word is hidden in the decoration. The piercing is extremely well-done and there are no splits or breaks. This fish slice measures about 12 3/8 inches in length and weighs about 160 grams, or more than 5 troy ounces. Condition is excellent, with a few minor scratches and minimal surface wear. There are no dents, splits (aside from a tiny fissure or two adjacent to the hallmarks, resulting from the die striking the piece to imprint the hallmarks - this is common and is considered immaterial) or repairs. There is no monogram or armorial, and no evidence of any erasure. All in all a simply gorgeous piece!
