SOLD

Offered is a fine Canadian coin silver toddy ladle in the Scottish taste, made by the firm of James E. Ellis & Co. of Toronto, whose biographical information follows the description of this item. This ladle measures about 6 inches in length and weighs about 30 grams. It has an engraved monogram to the front and the maker's mark of Ellis to the back, accompanied by several hallmarks including an unusual one of a beaver. Condition is very good overall, with modest wear from normal use but no dents, splits or repairs. All in all a fine piece of earlier Canadian coin silver!

J.E. Ellis & Co - Toronto, Ontario, Canada: James E. Ellis moved from Liverpool, England, to Canada in 1848 and was associated with Rossin Bros until 1852. He bought the business in that year and was joined by his son in 1862. The firm changed its name to J.E. Ellis & Co in 1877 in partnership with M.T. Cain. The business continued until 1901.
