Offered is an excellent 18th Century English silver pair of cast sugar tongs bearing the maker's mark B*M for Benjamin Mordecai/Benjamin Montigue, working in London circa 1770 and later. This pair of tongs should date to about 1775 based on style. This piece is in excellent condition with no evidence of splits or repairs and with a good surface and marks. It measures about 5 1/4 inches in length and weighs about 32 grams. There is no armorial or monogram in the engraved reserve at the bow, and no sign of erasure. All in all an excellent example of a transitional piece midway between the ornate cast-arm tongs of the 1760s and early 1770s, and the bright-cut tongs of the 1780s and 1790s!
