Offered is a very fine pair of American coin silver cauldron style salt cellars by silversmith John C. Moore, and retailed by Canfield Bro. & Co. of Baltimore. These appear to date to the 1850s or a little earlier. Each is crested with an armorial of a dolphin in the classical taste, probably period to the pieces' manufacture. Each also bears a slightly later inscription, showing an initial date of 1858 and a perhaps later addition in 1893. Each cellar bears John C. Moore's manufacturer's mark (his initials) and each bears an incuse retailer's mark for Canfield Bro. & Co. Each cellar retains most of the gilding to the interior. This pair of cellars each measures about 1 1/4 inches high and about 2 1/2 inches across. Condition overall is very good, with some signs of wear and scratching from normal use, and slight pushes the legs, especially on one salt - as is the case with virtually all salts of this type with any age to them. There are no splits or repairs detected. These present very well as display pieces and could also be used on a day-to-day basis. All in all a fine pair of crested coin silver salt cellars!
