Offered is a very rare example of the work of Zanesville silversmith Charles Hill, working circa 1815-33 in that town. This piece is probably a cream ladle; it measures about 5 3/4 inches in length, and weighs about 30 grams. This ladle is engraved "C" in period script and is marked three times with Hill's maker's mark of C.Hill in a serrated rectangular punch. This maker's mark is sometimes mis-attributed to another Charles Hill, working in Canadaigua, NY circa 1815-17. However, this piece is definitely the work of an Ohio silversmith and there is no evidence to support the attribution to the NY man. Condition on this piece is excellent, with minimal wear and no dents, splits or repairs. All in all an excellent example of a serving piece by a rare early Ohio silversmith!
