Offered is a very rare set of three early American coin silver tea spoons by Easton, Maryland silversmith Robert Kersey, about whom little has been published. Birdback teaspoons by Mr. Kersey with the same maker's mark that appears on these spoons are known, and Kersey's traditional working date is given as circa 1793. It is evident from the style of these spoons that he worked a while longer, as the squared shoulders were in use mostly from 1805-10, give or take a couple of years. These teaspoons each have a clear, well-struck maker's mark and each spoon also has a period engraved script monogram of "SM". These spoons measure about 5 1/2 inches in length on average, and the set weighs a total of about 36 grams. Condition overall is very good; there are a few dings and dimples and some modest surface wear, but no splits or repairs. All in all a fine set by a rare Easton silversmith!
