Offered is a lovely and quite rare example of the silverwork of Bernard Hendel, better known as a clockmaker and the least known of the Hendel brothers. Bernard worked from about 1811 to 1844, and a number of clocks bearing his name alone or in conjunction with his brother Jacob are known. However, there is almost no silver bearing his name. This is only the second spoon I've come across by Bernard Hendel, and it is a good one. By style it should date to about 1825, but could be a little earlier or later. The period engraved script monogram is MQ, and is well executed. The maker's mark shows minor wear but is very legible. This piece measures about 5 3/8 inches in length and weighs about 12 grams. Condition is good overall, with some modest wear and some dings and dimples to the bowl, but no splits or repairs. All in all a lovely and rare example of early Carlisle coin silver by a sought-after maker!
