Offered is an interesting and unusual early 18th Century Brittania standard English silver tablespoon hallmarked for London, and what appears to be the year 1715 or so. The maker's mark is poorly struck but looks like it may be "Sc", which would make it likely the maker is William Scarlett, specialist spoonmaker of London working in this period. Scarlett was prolific and experimented with form, so that would make sense. This spoon has a very unusual midrib that branches out into almost a diamond pattern - it appears to both strengthen the piece and give it new aesthetic attributes. For whatever reason, this style didn't catch on, and while pronounced straight midribs have been seen, hallmarked for around this time, this one seems to be virtually unique. I do guarantee it to be an original piece; this midrib/decoration is not a later addition. This piece measures about 8 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 48 grams. Condition appears to be very good overall, with quite a bit of tip wear and some small dings and scratches from normal use, but no major dents and no splits or apparent repairs. All in a fine and rare variant early English spoon!
