Offered is a fine and rare example of the silverwork of Harrisburg silversmith Joseph Doll (b. 1768 - d. 1818), who is listed in that town from 1795 to 1818, primarily working as a silversmith and clockmaker. Mr. Doll was born in York, PA and may have trained there, but the majority of his working career seems to have been spent in Harrisburg. His silver is desirable and fairly uncommon, but what makes this ladle really interesting and rare is the period engraving of H.Doll in script, presumably for a relation of some kind. Doll's wife and three sons had names not beginning with H, so it is unclear who this might have been made for. Nonetheless a nice large piece of Doll family silver! This ladle measures about 12 1/2 inches in length and weighs a heavy 188 grams or so - about six troy ounces. Condition is good overall, with some minor areas of rubbing or scratching and a few small dings to the bowl, but no major dents and no splits or repairs. All in all a fine piece of early Harrisburg coin silver by a noted silversmith and clockmaker!
