Offered is a very scarce set of four early North Carolina coin silver teaspoons by noted silversmith John Selph, working in Fayetteville from about 1804 through 1837, the year before his death. Most if not all of Selph's work is of his own manufacture, particularly the early pieces like these shoulder-less transitional fiddle spoons, which should date to the first decade or so of his career. Each spoon is clearly marked with a well-struck maker's mark, and each has a nicely executed period script engraved monogram of "BD". These spoons measure about 5 3/4 inches in length on average and the set weighs a total of about 55 grams. Condition is fair to good overall, with only modest tip and surface wear, no major dents and no splits or repairs; there is a little rippling to a couple of the stems (see last pic). All in all fantastic and rare set of quite early Southern coin silver spoons from North Carolina!
