Offered is a nice American coin silver table spoon retailed by Lyons, Iowa jeweler John H. Potts, working in that town from 1854 to his death in 1914. This piece probably dates to no later than about 1870, and most likely is from the 1860s. The John H. Potts whose retailer's mark appears on this spoon (which is also marked Lyons for the city), is apparently not the same man who was advertising as a silversmith and dentist in Fayette, Missouri in 1844 - the Iowa J. H. Potts was born in Harper's Ferry, Maryland in 1833 and was trained in Maryland as a watchmaker. Thereafter he relocated to Lyons in about 1854. This piece has a good clear mark and is also engraved with a period script monogram. This spoon measures about 8 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 39 grams. Condition is fair to good overall, with some moderate wear from normal use, but no splits or repairs. All in all a nice early Iowa coin silver spoon!
