Offered is a beautiful American coin silver table spoon in the fiddle pattern but decorated in a style recalling the late 18th Century by noted Philadelphia silversmith Edward Lownes (1792-1834), and bearing one of his maker's marks. This piece has a period engraved script monogram within a hand-engraved chain reserve with trailing decoration. This sort of decoration became much less common after about 1805, and would have cost more as more labor would be required. Please take a look at all the photos. This spoon measures about 8 3/4 inches in length and weighs a heavy 65 grams or so. Condition is good overall, with some surface wear and the bowl slightly out of round, but with no splits or repairs. This is a nice example of an interesting piece by this prolific and well-respected silversmith, who died young at age 43. All in all a good piece of decorated Philadelphia coin silver!
